Gears are mechanical devices that rotate and transmit power and torque to other rotating elements, typically other gears, through the use of teeth or cogs. There are various types of gears, generally having the same purpose of changing the direction of motion, the speed, and/or the transmitted torque. Change gears are interchangeable gears used on machine tools to change speeds. Gear blanks are semi-finished materials from which gears are manufactured. Gear racks are straight gears that are typically driven by mating pinions. Helical and spur gears are closely related except spur gears have straight teeth while the teeth on helical gears are angled allowing for a higher torque transmission for a given size.
